Off the streets and attending school
for over 50% of the street kids in
our program!
Sri Sai Saraswathi Vidyakendra is the private
school that we have selected for our kids. The school has classes
from tiny tots (three yeas of age, which means our little ones
are also in school) and currently up to 10th grade.
Ideally located, our kids walk to and from school daily. The
school provides a comprehensive curriculum, and each child
was tested for proper placement during the admission interview.
Most of our kids, having lacked
sufficient tutoring and education until last year, have been
put back a year or two. We supported this decision, as it will
allow them to learn at their proper levels.

The school system for poor kids in India
is a challenge; often, children are promoted to the next level
without having learned enough to merit such promotion. After-school
tutoring is the norm in India because many teachers only teach
the material in these private sessions, as they earn
significant income by charging for such sessions. Teaching
the material during school hours would deprive them of this
income.
Unfortunately, poor kids can't afford such tutoring fees, and
often are not raised in an environment that encourages learning
and studying after school.
Many poor children arrive at 10th grade,
only to fail the statewide examination at that point. Once
they fail, they have no other options for continuing, or catching
up on, their education. We are endeavoring to prevent this
from happening to our kids.
After school and on weekends, tutors come to help the kids
with various subjects, inclding English. If you are interested
in tutoring, send us an email.
