Things We Need
in memory

For the poor living in rural areas or on the streets who cannot or don't know to get to a doctor, medical care can be challenging. What's needed is simple: caring and qualified doctors who understands the health needs of those living in poverty, and people resources and funds to support the effort.

The children and moms on the streets, being outcasts from society, often need proper monitoring of a particular ailment.

We help with their medical care by making use of all available medical services, taking them to welcoming doctors, purchasing prescribed medicines for them, and by accompanying and supporting them when undergoing hospitalization at local medical facilities.

The Serious Conditions

Tuberculosis

Being poor in India often means contracting tuberculosis because of cramped living conditions and/or weakened immune systems. We help our kids and moms get proper treatment when they are diagnosed with tuberculosis, and we monitor them to make sure they take their medicines for the duration (usually 6-9 months). Tuberculosis is easily cured if one properly follows doctors' instructions on taking ATT (antituberculosis treatment).

HIV/AIDS

In India, the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS is daunting and many doctors still don't understand the disease. Our moms and kids have been ignored or kicked out of hospitals upon a doctor learning of their HIV status.

Our Approach to Medical and Dental Care

Although finding caring, qualified doctors is a challenge when working with the poor, we continue to seek out available resources. Through the existing medical facilities in the area, we seek out the best doctors and services for our people, as the quality of medical care varies greatly among doctors in India. We have relationships with high quality medical facilities for both HIV patients and our non-HIV women and children.

Sometimes, we are blessed with free services from very qualified doctors and at other times, we must pay for the services. But we believe that each of our kids and women deserves the same kind of medical attention that we would provide if they were our own children, or that we would want for ourselves.

Our positive moms and kids are registered at Asha Kirana Charitable Hospital, an excellent facility for HIV+ patients. Here, they receive consistent and compassionate counseling and in-patient and out-patient care for their ailments, including pre- and post-natal care for HIV+ moms and their newborns.

We receive free and/or discounted medical care from Columbia Asia Hospital, a state-of-the-art, clean, and modern facility in Mysore.

We also provide our kids with dental care, including braces ("clips") for those who need them.
