Things We Need
in memory

Little Prema

We met Prema when she was about seven years old. She had been living on the street basically since birth, with a couple of years here and there either in a temporary rented house or at a children's shelter. Her dad died when she was very little.

Prema had been plagued by infections since birth, the worst of which is a chronic ear infection. She contracted tuberculosis when she was eight, and we helped get her proper hospitalization and treatment.

Being second after her older brother, Prema never received much attention or affection from her mom. Regardless, she has grown into a beautiful, caring and generous little girl, always willing to lend a helping hand.

Prema

After years of suffering from recurring ear infections and numerous visits to doctors, we finally found the right doctor for Prema, one who paid attention to her problem. Prema has been unable to hear for a long time out of that one ear, and as a result, is far behind in school.

When we met Prema, her mom used to force her to beg so that they would have enough money for food. Prema no longer begs, and is a much happier child. In 2007, we started Prema on tutoring sessions six days a week, to try to catch her up a bit in school. She loves school and enjoys learning -- she just needs a little extra attention.

Today, Prema has healthy ears (both were operated on) and stays at Karunya Mane with the other street kids we help, her friends. She continues her education in school and also enjoys English tutoring with one of our volunteers.
